Grants are available from the Forestry Commission towards the costs of woodland
management. This includes funding for the restoration of derelict coppice and,
in some cases, management of uneconomic coppice through operations such as
restocking and protection from deer or rabbit damage. These Grants are known as
Woodland Improvement Grants (WIG) and are available through the Forestry
Commissions Woodland Grant Scheme (WGS) www.forestry.gov.uk/forestry/hcou-4u5fk7.
Currently these grants will pay up to 50% of the agreed costs.
Other help towards the costs of management is often available. In the south east
of England county councils including Hampshire, Surrey and West Sussex are
working in partnership with the Forestry Commission to increase the amount of
grant aid available for these works. In Hampshire up to 90% funding is available
towards the costs of deer fencing in coppice woodlands meeting the schemes
criteria, www.hants.gov.uk/biodiversity/hcc/landmanagement.html.
In publicly owned woods or those managed with a high level of community
involvement - grant for woodland management works may be available from a range
of other sources including the Heritage Lottery Fund.
